Twitter Remove NFT Support as Popularity Continues to Dwindle Down

Twitter remove NFT support – When non fungible tokens or NFTs were starting to become a thing a few years back, Twitter was one of the first tech giants to jump on the bandwagon. However, at the start of this year, it seems that Twitter which is now known as X is starting to back away from the NFT landscape.

To keep up to speed, back in 2022 Twitter introduced the ability for NFT owners to use their purchased picture as their avatar. Each verified NFT avatar will have what they call a Twitter Hexagonal PFP or Twitter Hexagonal Profile Picture which differs from the regular circle profile picture.

Twitter or X removes NFT support despite being owned by Elon

One of the main reasons why this caught everyone’s attention is because Twitter has now been acquired by Elon Musk, who is well known for being supportive of NFT in the past, it came as a surprise that he is the one who pulled the plug, especially amidst the dwindling of NFT usage in mainstream use. Some users complain that this removal might negatively affect the platform as it may cause an increase in NFT scams.

While so far there has yet to be a proper announcement on X or Twitter removes NFT support, the shift of focus was first found in the platform’s help centre page about X Premium features where previously it states as follows:

“As a Premium subscriber, you can create a customize your profile so you can show off the NFTs you own in a hex-shaped profile picture on your account. After a temporary connection to your crypto wallet that allows you to set up an NFT as your profile picture, your digital asset displays in a special hexagon shape that identifies you as the owner of that NFT.”

As of writing, the text has now been edited to only “As a Premium subscriber, you can create a community on X to connect with people who share similar interests.” removing any trace related to the NFT integration. However, it seems that those who are already using this feature can still retain their hexagonal profile picture meaning that it may only affect newer users, at least for now.

Bottom line

The early year of 2024 may become another sad news for NFT enthusiasts as Twitter now known as X is hinting at a sign of pulling back from NFT space. It came out as a bit of a surprise considering the platform is now owned by Elon Musk who previously had a reputation for being supportive of the project.

So far there has yet to be an official announcement about the issue as the only changes that they showed are just the removal of text mentioning NFT on their About X Premium help centre page. Users with hexagonal profile pictures can also still be seen retaining the feature albeit the same thing cannot be said for newer users.
