TikTok Rolls New Feature That Sets Teenagers Screen Time to 60 Minutes a Day

TikTok Rolls New Feature-The tech giant TikTok has announced a new feature that sets screen time for users under 18 to be 60 minutes a day.

The default settings require users to enter a passcode to continue using the application once the time threshold has been passed.

For users under 13, the limit will also be set to 60 minutes however it requires parental permission to add 30 minutes of screen time.

Reasoning behind the decision

Carmac Keenan, head of TikTok’s trust and safety, commented “We believe digital experiences should bring joy and play a positive role in how people express themselves, discover ideas, and connect. We’re improving our screen time tool with more custom options, introducing new default settings for teen accounts, and expanding Family Pairing with more parental controls.”

The decision to limit screen time was under consultation with academic research and experts from the Digital Wellness Lab at Boston Children’s Hospital as research shows that increasing the awareness of time helps individuals to spend their time wisely.

Why awareness matters

According to the research conducted by Internet Matters, the existence of a third party that reminds individuals, in this case, teenagers, about their well-being makes them feel reassured, calm, and relaxed, able to feel self-esteem and autonomy.

However, it is also noted that most teens wanted to take responsibility for their screen time themselves, without input from their parents. Thus, the idea of providing options to create awareness is the most viable solution as it also helps teach responsible time management.
