Starfield most innovative game on Steam – Each year, there is a concurring tradition hosted by Steam to let its user base nominate games listed on its store to be awarded in The Steam Awards with this year’s winner for the Game of The Year is unsurprisingly taken by Larian Studio’s Baldur’s Gate 3 as well as the surprisingly fun— recently released game Lethal Company taking the spot for Better With Friends award. Alongside those two, there are also Dave the Diver winning the Sit Back and Relax and The Last of Us Part I snagging the Best Soundtrack category.
But there is one— no, two suspicious winners this year. Bethesda game’s Starfield on the Most Innovative Gameplay award and Red Dead Redemption 2 in a Labor of Love category, a game that flops in its multiplayer department compared to its Grand Theft Auto V sibling and has basically become abandoned by Rockstar.
Why Starfield and Red Dead Redemption 2 Won a Steam Awards?
Well, the only possible explanation for this is simply because the community just wanted to give a troll result. The game Starfield, for example, has been notoriously known as being so barren and counter-innovative as despite all the hype, it does not come close to its successful predecessor Skyrim because the developers expect the community to “build” the game rather than themselves.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is no different as by no means the game is bad and heck, even by today’s standards the game is still highly regarded for having astonishing graphics and an amazing prequel to the original Red Dead series. The issue comes in its category as the “Labor of Love” award where, we quote it directly, a game that “has been out for a while. The team is well past the debut of their creative baby, but being the good parents they are, these devs continue to nurture and support their creation. This game, to this day, is still getting new content after all these years.”
For those who are unaware, Red Dead Redemption 2 also comes with its online version called Red Dead Online and is running with a similar business model to Rockstar’s previous and successful game Grand Theft Auto V the thing is, the Red Dead Online fails to meet Rockstar executive’s expectations during its debut. As a result, Rockstar then practically pulled the plug early by abandoning the online updates and went back to prioritising GTA V.
And it doesn’t stop at that as in the latest Rockstar leak, it’s shown that the developers have planned online updates for RDR2 including a single-player DLC but those are all cancelled as it seems the higher-up find them to be unprofitable. Truly a contradiction to what the Labor of Love Award is supposed to be.
The recent Steam Awards 2023 has just concluded and its results have raised many people’s eyebrows as they found Starfield to be nominated as a winner in the Most Innovative Gameplay award. Not only that, the same thing goes to the Labor of Love award where Red Dead Redemption 2 took the throne.
Most people assume that those who voted for these two games to be nominated did so with a sarcastic and ironic intention behind it as both games are notoriously known as being the opposite of what they actually are and considering how Steam Awards heavily leans toward people’s actual vote, then that might as well be the case.
