Helldivers 2 PSN — The Helldivers 2, developed by Arrowhead Game Studios, has been making waves in the gaming community even potentially snatching the throne for Game of The Year 2024. Unfortunately, those glimmers of hope are now shattered to ruins by a recent decision related to Sony PSN account linking enforcement.

Just a few days ago, a piece of sudden news from Sony announced that the so-called “grace period” for Helldivers 2 where players are not required to link their in-game profile to Sony’s PSN account is ending. Thus, forcing old and new players to either comply or lose access to the game that they purchase.

The official Helldivers 2 community post on Steam claims that the enforcement plays a critical role in “protecting our players and upholding the value of safety and security provided on PlayStation and PlayStation Studios games”. They then added all new Helldivers 2 players on Steam past the 5th of May are required to connect their Steam account to their PSN profile even if they don’t have a PlayStation console to begin with.

Obviously, this caused a big stir of controversy as until just recently the game was sold worldwide for quite some time and introducing this sudden enforcement, could potentially result in players who previously purchased the game losing access to their products if they live in countries where PSN is not officially supported.

And lose access they did because as of 6th May 2024, Sony has decided instead of taking a step back and reconsidering their action, they decided to remove the games from countries that aren’t officially supported by PSN— which means a total of 177 countries are now unable to play the game even if they previously purchased the game. This also resulted in the game which was previously graced with an “overwhelmingly positive” review on Steam to “overwhelmingly negative” as more than 250,000 people expressed their utter disappointment with Sony’s infamous corporate decision.

How to bypass Helldivers 2 PSN requirement?

As of writing, it is impossible to bypass the requirement as the game relies on online-only access. As such, players are required to create a PSN account even if they don’t play the game on PlayStation.

This, of course, is subject to change if Sony decides to backtrack from their decision as even the CEO of Arrowhead Studios Helldivers 2 creator Johan Pilstedt also voices his disagreement on the direction that Sony has taken. He promises that he and the team are going back to the drawing board to find a better solution with Sony.

Bottom line

The GOTY 2024 candidate Helldivers 2 has recently hell-dived into the pit of “overwhelmingly negative” reviews as Sony pulled a corporate move to force players to link their in-game profile to PSN. Sony has also made an infamous move by removing the game from countries that aren’t officially supported by PSN.

Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilstedt tweeted that he and the team are working with Sony to find a better solution to this controversy as he is aware of the potential backlash of the approach but now that it actually happens; it might be a potential bargaining power for the discussion.
